Bribery Act Under Threat

Write to the Justice Secretary, Ken Clarke, urging him to ensure that the Bribery Act is implemented.
The Evening Standard and interests in the City of London have been pushing the Government to scrap the Bribery Act, a crucial law that would close loopholes that allow bribery and breed corruption.

A national outcry now, demonstrating widespread public support for the act, will hold the Government accountable to implementing it, and stop the bribing companies from getting their way.
The Bribery Act is critical in combating corruption. It outlaws UK officials from bribing foreign officials, or allowing agents to bribe on their behalf.

The Evening Standard have run an editorial campaign of fear and misinformation over the Bribery Act, even arguing that the Act would "strangle commercial activity."

We cannot let them get away with arguing that commercial benefit is more important than our integrity, or the lives of the world's poorest and most vulnerable.

On January 24th, the head of Transparency International UK, Chandu Krishnan is meeting with the Justice Secretary to argue the case, and he needs our support.

Write to Ken Clarke now by customising the letter on the right, and ensure that the our Government stays strong in the fight against corruption.

How to make your letter count

  • Personalise.Add your personal opinion and any relevant experience / knowledge that you have to the letter.
  • Ask a Question. When you ask an MP or Minister a question, they are much more likely to respond. You may like to ask questions like why are they reviewing? What is their response to the Evening Standard?
  • Localise. Mention your local area, MP or constituency, especially if you live in a Government seat. Send a copy or your letter to your local MP - and tell the Secretary of State that's what you've done.
  • Demonstrate Knowledge. You're not an expert, but you should have a good grasp of the Act if you want to change the email. You can learn more about the Act on our blog, read Transparency International's response to the Evening Standard here, and read the actual text of the Act here.
