Last week our friends and partners at Oxfam released a short animation that outlines the impact that aid have on the lives of the world’s poorest people.
It’s a really fun piece that captures many of the same ideas that we focus on at the Global Poverty Project – including the role that aid can play in enabling a community to work towards a future filled with opportunity and the importance of health and education.
It’s part of a much bigger push by Oxfam that is underway to reframe what we make of aid. Oxfam are sick of newspaper headlines, books and reports saying that aid doesn’t work. So, they’ve countered with a report of their own – 21st century aid – which argues that aid isn’t good or bad in itself, and that it’s up to us to make sure it’s spent well.
It’s an important point that I think the report makes well, but the animation misses. Yes, aid can and is working in many places – we regularly share stories about how it can work well. But, we’ve all got to be vigilant in ensuring that we don’t over-step the mark.
Aid doesn’t end poverty – people do. Our role is to support people to fight poverty, which includes aid, but certainly can’t end there. To find out more about international aid and what you can do, click here. |
