“I want to present so that I can get others to be committed too”.
My Poverty Journey
Like many people, I became aware of issues of poverty at school. I think for many people this is where global poverty education stops… which is a real shame. Except for me, I felt the need to do more for the billions of people living in poverty around the world. The first step and probably the most influential was when I signed up for the ZeroSEVEN Make Poverty History Road trip. The road trip’s main goal was to spread the message that our government should commit to giving 0.7% of our GNI to foreign aid. Through this road trip I learned even more about poverty issues, what we can do to help and more importantly the Millennium Development Goals.
It was then, that I realised that ending poverty could actually be a reality. Not just an idealistic dream. That it could be my generation that would see the end of extreme poverty. And that it could be my generation that would make it happen. Guidelines and framework like the MDGs have been put in place to set realistic and achievable targets, and if we were all aware of what we could do and what we could ask our governments and business to do, then these goals will be achieved. So the first point of action is to get people to know about what they can do, and how it really can make a difference.
Why GPP presentations?
I want to be a GPP presenter, to show Australia, and the world, the problems we face as a global society and how we can overcome them. As I said, for many people, education of world poverty ended at school, or maybe they never learned about it in the first place. GPP engages with these people to bring action. GPP shows that we do live in a global society and poverty is a global problem.
I believe the GPP does have a fundamental role to play in ending extreme poverty. As it acts as a medium, to show and motivate society, to get everyday people to commit to simple tasks, that collectively will see the end of extreme poverty. I am committed to ending poverty. I want to present so I can get others to be committed too.
